15th February

Uh oh… rain…torrential rain! We spent the day exploring Hoi An. First stop, the market to buy the most splendid rain ponchos. They kept us dry all day at a cost of 10,000 Vietnamese dong (35p)! Our next shop was a coffee shop … it sold many varieties of Vietnamese coffe including my favourite,  Culi. I had the most delicious mocha … smooth but with a good balance of coffee and chocolate. As we were sitting there a man came in … he had such a lovely face … I asked if I could take his photo… he was quite abashed but posed anyway. At first he got up and moved because he thought I wanted a photo of the shelves of coffee behind him!

Hoi An is a very pretty town and such a contrast to Saigon. There are no cars allowed in the centre so it’s very peaceful in that way but it is also a tourist town and the street vendors are relentless even coming into restaurants while you eat. We found a fabulous vegan restaurant … the staff took our ponchos and hung them up to dry. We ordered our food and as it was erred the waitress explained how to mix the flavours and the traditional way of eating the food.

Having dried out for a while both ourselves and the weather we made our way down the road in the dark to enjoy another bowl of noodles at the Mate cafe. The guy who made the food gave me the recipe and a pack of the special blend of spices that went in it. So kind.

Raine modelling the rain poncho. Very stylish!

The Japanese bridge. In Hoi An there is a lot of Japanese, Chinese and Korean influences due to it being an important trading port for many centuries.

My juice obsession continues!

Amazing vegan lunch.

Complementary fruit at Mate restaurant.

Food so good that it was eaten before a picture was taken

Spice mix so we can make it at home
