29th January

To catch a train in Java you book the tickets in advance and then have to go to the station on the day of travel to collect a boarding card. The 11.30 train started at Ketapang so we were able to board and find our seats without hassle. I have to say it’s the most comfortable train ever! The seats recline, there’s space to stretch out, food and drinks are brought round regularly, the toilets were cleaned hourly, it was punctual at all 15 stops over a 6 hr journey … very impressive. It did take 6 hours to travel 294km … good for us as we were able to enjoy the ever changing scenery, from the flat terraces of the rice field to mountains and eventually,  the coast. Leaving the calm of the train and entering the fray of the taxi rank was quite discombobulating. After a bit of haggling we secured a taxi to the Majapahit Hotel for a bit of 5* luxury. I love it! It’s a hotel with a history and with old world charm… cleverly designed so that the rooms stay relatively cool and I don’t have to use the air conditioning which is bliss. There is a massive pool which is a bonus and the fact that it’s deepest point is only 1.5 metres is an extra bonus for me!
